Abstract
Acne vulgaris is a chronic and complex inflammatory skin disease, recognized as one of the main reasons for dermatology consultation. For this reason, the objective of this study is to clarify the influence of both harmful and beneficial nutrients, categorized by food groups, on the development of acne vulgaris. Different nutrients can have an important relation with acne pathogenesis. They can stimulate or inhibit biochemical elements that can potentially influence excessive sebum production, hyperproliferation of cutibacterium acnes, hyperkeratinization of pilosebaceous follicles, and inflammatory mechanisms. Therefore, this article provides patients and professionals with updated information gathered from 54 international references regarding the influence of diet on acne. The findings indicate that food such as milk and dairy products, high glycemic index foods saturated fats, and chocolate are deemed harmful, while a diet rich in fish, polyunsaturated fatty acids, the consumption of fruits and vegetables, probiotic foods, vitamins, and minerals are considered as beneficial.
