Abstract

Marine sediment samples were collected from six stations in Bahía Limón, Colón, Panama, prior to the construction of a pier in 2016. The study aimed to determine the baseline species present in the marine benthos. The samples were collected using a Ponar grab with three replicates per site. The samples were preserved and labeled for later identification in the laboratory. Statistical tests (Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, ANOVA, cluster analysis, Shannon diversity, Simpson’s diversity, and evenness) were performed on the obtained data. The phylum Mollusca was the most dominant, accounting for 75% of the species' abundance. The tests revealed that the data followed a normal distribution. The applied ANOVA indicated no significant differences between the groups (p > 0.05). The Shannon diversity index for the entire area was high (2.103), and the Simpson’s diversity and evenness indices also yielded high values of 0.8701 and 0.9571, respectively. The data suggest that as the distance from the coast increases, both diversity and evenness tend to rise. Cluster analysis revealed similarities between stations of at least 75%, with stations 2 and 3 being the most similar.
