Abstract

Suicide has been recognized as a public health issue, especially among university students, a stage in which greater vulnerabilities arise due to academic, social, and personal situations. Within this context, the objective was to examine the relationship between suicidal ideation and the clinical dimensions assessed by the MMPI-2-RF in first-year Psychology students at a public university in southeastern Mexico. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional and correlational design was used. Eighty students participated and completed the MMPI-2-RF. Pearson correlations were performed between the suicidal ideation scale (ISU) and various clinical dimensions, along with Student’s t-tests to explore variations by sex. The results showed positive and statistically significant correlations between ISU and variables such as demoralization, general distress, emotional dysfunction, helplessness, anxiety, decreased positive emotions, dysfunctional negative emotions, and self-doubt. Although men obtained slightly higher scores, no significant differences by sex were identified. It was concluded that the MMPI-2-RF made it possible to detect indicators associated with suicidal ideation and could support the development of preventive strategies and institutional interventions to promote mental health in university education.
